Damage we repair

What is light collision damage?

Low-speed hits, backing incidents and parking lot damage. The dent you can see is usually the smallest part of the job — here's what's behind it.

Light collision covers the low-speed impacts that don't total a vehicle but do real damage: backing into a post, being backed into, curb and parking-block strikes, door dings that went well past a ding, and minor front or rear hits in traffic. The reason these are worth a proper inspection is that modern bumper covers are designed to hide what happened. The flexible cover pops back into shape while the absorber, the reinforcement bar behind it, the mounting tabs and increasingly the sensors and cameras mounted in that area take the actual hit.

How light collision damage affects a vehicle

Hidden structural damageCrushed foam absorbers, bent reinforcement bars and broken mounting tabs behind a cover that looks fine.
Panel misalignmentUneven gaps at doors, hood and trunk, which cause wind noise, water leaks and doors that don't latch cleanly.
Sensor & camera damageParking sensors, blind-spot radar and backup cameras knocked out of position — often needing recalibration, not just reinstallation.
Lighting & bracketsCracked lamp housings and broken headlamp mounting tabs that let a light sag or fill with moisture.
Broken paint edgesCreased and scuffed panels where the finish is fractured at the impact line — corrosion starts there first.
Suspension & steeringCurb and parking-block strikes can shift alignment, bend a control arm or damage a wheel, showing up later as pull and tire wear.
Worth knowing

If your vehicle has driver-assist features — automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane keeping, adaptive cruise — anything that moved a sensor or camera needs recalibration after repair. A sensor that's reinstalled but not recalibrated can read the road wrong. We identify what's affected and make sure calibration is part of the plan.

Why 'it's just a scuff' usually isn't

  • The cover lies. Flexible bumper covers return to shape after impacts that flattened the absorber and bent the bar behind them. The next hit then has nothing left to absorb it.
  • Gaps mean water. A panel that no longer sits flush lets water and air past the seal. That's wind noise now and a wet carpet, corroded connectors or a mildew smell later.
  • Broken paint rusts. Creased and scuffed panels have fractured finish at the impact line, and that's where corrosion begins — usually along a body line where it spreads visibly.
  • Unrepaired damage shows on a history report. A documented, properly repaired hit reads far better to a buyer or appraiser than visible, unaddressed damage.
  • Alignment problems eat tires. A curb strike that shifted alignment quietly wears out a set of tires and makes the vehicle track badly long before anyone connects it to the parking lot.

How we repair it

We handle light collision work — the bumper, panel, door and fender damage that comes from low-speed impacts. Heavy structural and frame work we'll tell you about honestly rather than take on for the sake of taking it.

  • Teardown inspection so the estimate reflects what's behind the cover, not just what's visible in the parking lot.
  • Bumper cover, absorber and reinforcement repair or replacement, with proper mounting so it sits right and stays put.
  • Panel repair and replacement for doors, fenders and quarters — straightened and aligned to correct gaps.
  • Lighting, grille, trim and hardware replacement so nothing is left hanging on a broken tab.
  • Sensor and camera reinstallation with calibration identified and scheduled where the vehicle requires it.
  • Color-matched refinishing and blending, then a final inspection with you standing next to the vehicle before it leaves.
Insurance

Collision damage runs through your collision coverage (or the other party's liability if they were at fault). Either way, you choose the shop — not the insurer. We'll work with any carrier and handle supplements when teardown finds more than the initial estimate covered.

Common questions

Collision FAQ

The bumper looks fine after a low-speed hit. Do I still need it checked?

It's worth a look. Bumper covers spring back while the absorber and reinforcement bar behind them stay crushed, so the next impact has nothing left to absorb it. An inspection doesn't take long.

Can I choose my own shop, or does my insurance decide?

You choose. Insurers may recommend shops, but the decision on where your vehicle is repaired is yours in every state we work in.

What counts as 'light' collision?

Bumpers, fenders, doors, quarters and the hardware around them from low-speed impacts. If a vehicle needs heavy frame or structural work, we'll say so and point you in the right direction rather than take work we're not the best fit for.

Do you handle the ADAS sensor recalibration?

We identify what your vehicle needs and make sure calibration is part of the repair plan, so the car leaves with its driver-assist systems reading correctly.
